Hiking to the bottom of the Grand Canyon
OK. I have thought about the first post for awhile. But the time is now. I opened a YMCA membership yesterday. Today I did the eleiptical: 6 min and 42 sec and .5 miles. My thighs were dieing. I left. My Mom is always concerned that my sister and I will overdo our excercise. Well, Laurie might, but not me. 6 min? Thighs tired? I don't want to overdo it. I am outa here! Needless to say I have a lot of work to do before we fly out to hike the Grand Canyon!
So this will be my documentation of how a 49 year old lady gets ready to hike to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and hopefully gets out again!! I have been joking that I don't want to perish in my attempt.
For all our other hiking trips I have never purposefully trained for them. I pretty much did 10 mile, x elevation gain hikes cold turkey. Felt every muscle in my legs for the next few days but possible to do. Well, I have not thought that plan would be good for a hike of this magnitude. But I have been talking for the last year about how I would need to exercise to get ready!! This summer I did walk 3 miles everyday while I was in Maine on vacation (probably almost 3 weeks over the summer) and I have been intermittently running, well, jogging, but probably no more than 100 feet at a time. Additionally, in the last few days I have done my Beach Body video: Chaleen Extreme. Again, I don't want to hurt myself so pretty light weights too! Time to turn up the heat. Game on. Today is January 3rd. We hike down into the Canyon on April 23rd. Let the training begin in earnest.
